MindsDB began with a vision to make artificial intelligence not just powerful, but accessible. In 2018, co-founders Jorge Torres and Adam Carrigan released the initial MindsDB code to the public, inspired by the concept of self-evolving, human-aligned AI from Iain M. Banks’ Culture series. Their ambition was to build "Minds"—intelligent search and predictive analytics systems that empower people to solve complex data challenges, without requiring them to become machine learning experts.
What started as an open-source passion project in Berkeley, CA has grown into the world’s most popular open-source platform for AI analytics and data workflow automation.

Jorge and Adam founded MindsDB to solve a critical and growing problem: machine learning was becoming more vital, but less accessible. Most companies lacked the time, resources, or specialized personnel to build full ML pipelines for search and predictive analytics. Data had to be extracted, cleaned, modeled, and re-integrated into business systems—a slow and fragile process.
Their breakthrough was deceptively simple but incredibly powerful: instead of forcing users to adopt new tools and workflows, MindsDB would bring machine learning directly to where the data already lives—inside databases. By integrating AI capabilities with familiar tools like SQL and platforms like MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Snowflake, MindsDB allowed developers to build and deploy ML models natively within their existing data environments. No data exports, no complex infrastructure—just AI, embedded.
This was a paradigm shift. MindsDB made it possible for teams to embed machine learning predictions inside their applications with just a few lines of SQL.
